Africans answer the call

A PROGRAM to settle refugees from the Horn of Africa in northern Victorian towns that have labour shortages has received a $200,000 boost from the Community Support Fund. So far, 20 Africans have found work as mechanics and welders in Swan Hill. The money will be administered by Murray-Mallee Training Company, which is working closely with Swan Hill Council to help families make a smooth transition to the area.

Police working smarter

THE Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Tim Holding, has told new police recruits that they are part of the largest police force in Victoria's history. Welcoming 21 new members, he praised Victoria Police for its efforts to increase the number of officers with tertiary qualifications. The force is seeking a university partner to help deliver degree courses to officers.
